Teaching a child how to read can be as enjoyable as it is challenging. There are a number of simple procedures that you should follow in order to make the learning journey a success.

Phonics is now one of the most widely recognised methods of teaching. In quick summary, phonics focuses on the sound a letter makes on its own and when combined with other letters to form a word.Just like a jigsaw puzzle, as the child becomes confident witsingle letters they then become able to piece the letters together, understanding short words and phrases. Whilst on paper this process sounds simple it can be quite a challenge for the child. The alphabet is made up of 26 letters, but did you know these letters make up 44 different sounds? For many children this is where the confusion starts.

Understanding phonics

When your child starts learning to read with phonics they will initially learn the sounds made by each single letter. This letter may be presented alone or as part of a word which will always be shown with a picture. In example, the sound that the letter “c” makes in the word “cat” or “p” for “pig”.The child is then taught how the sounds can change depending on the other letters used in the word.Just think of the two different sounds made by the letter “c” on its own, and when paired with an h to make “ch”.Ultimately, the child will begin to understand how the letters work with each other and will be able to form the correct pronunciation of the word.

For many children, learning to read with phonics starts at school age However, if your child appears ready then you can start to teach phonics at home.Reading with your child should be a pleasurable activity and you can start introducing phonics books. There are plenty available to either buy or loan from the library.Look out for brightly coloured books with the letters and sound printed in a bold typeface.Schools give a lot of time over to learning to read, so do not rush your child through the process at home.
